Between the „ruchadlo“ and the Czech Cottage: The (Non-)Discovery of the „Folk“ Culture Invention in the 19th Century and its Impact on Research into Vernacular Culture
Woitsch, Jiří
The article presents and uses specific examples (swing plow called ruchadlo and timber vernacular dwelling houses) to analyze the conceptualization of the common people and vernacular culture in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Two opposing beliefs on the ability of the non-elites to be actively creative were typical for this era. The one side assumed a completely passive taking over of patterns, technologies, etc. from economically and socially more advanced environments, while the other attributed exceptional creative abilities to „regular folk,“ some even leading to historic discoveries. These two concepts strongly resonated in various Central European trends in the humanities and social sciences throughout the entire 20th century. This was symptomatic, especially in those instances, where historians, museologists, art historians or even non-academic experts were the ones conducting the research. Both lines of thought share the highly problematic notion of viewing the people as a creative collective entity or a passive entity.
Architectural and historical research of the rural homestead Harazim Nr. 29 (Rájov, Zlatá Koruna municipality)
Facincani, Filip ; Lunger-Štěrbová, Daniela (advisor) ; Macek, Petr (referee)
The aim of the diploma thesis was to carry out a detailed architectonical survey of the homestead Harazim (Rájov, village Zlatá Koruna), which has been registered as a cultural monument since 1958. The survey proved that the oldest building of the homestead is a granary, dating back to the first quarter of the 17th century. The still noticeable three-part layout of the dwelling dates in its entirety to at least the end of the first third of the 18th century. Both the granary and the dwelling were substantially reconstructed around 1865, when the so-called small building, the knowledge of which became a partial aim of the thesis, was lost.

Vernacular architectural elements. Mitigating climate conditions in the category Cfa
Burešová, Karolína
Vernacular architecture is a source of inspiration and guidance for the design of housing in a particular region, as well as for protecting and improving the environment, it shows the use of the proper material and can save energy costs, as these buildings cope with the climate through the passive design strategy. The case study discovers the unmechanised architectural form of the elements, which react to the climate conditions on the built environment of the vernacular architecture. The cases are selected according to the Köppen climate classification calculated for the Czech Republic for the period 2071-2100, which is in the category Cfa, along with European cases in the same category Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Spain, and Krasnodar-Russia. These representatives are observed by Google Street View, and the forms of the architecture are compared. The potential of the research is to use the results in combination with architectural elements of the vernacular(1), contemporary(2) and ecological(3) housing architecture to design a new balanced housing model.

Veress, Dániel ; Himl, Pavel (advisor) ; Michaud, Eric (referee)
1 English Abstract Searching for Styles of National Architecture in Habsburg Central Europe 1890-1920 Art Nouveau and Turn-of-the-Century Architecture as Nation-Building This thesis examines aspirations of Central European nations to create architectural style, which would be particular to the given nation and would convey national spirit and character through architectural form. Inspired by social and cultural history, historians of architecture have recently begun to study conscious efforts of national elites to use architecture for nationalistic ends. Considerable attention has been paid to the interplay between national movements emerging in Europe before the World War I, and the concurrent developments in the field of architecture as signified by introduction of the Art Nouveau. However, most of these works focus on individual national building movement. Building on the existing set of studies developed in different national contexts, this thesis takes a step further and approaches the issue from the transnational perspective Applying the comparative history methodology to the three cases studies - Hungarian, Czech and Polish, all non-German ethnic groups in the Austro- Hungarian Monarchy - enables close examination of the intertwined development of modern nations and architecture. By the turn of the...

Štefaniková, Jana ; Procházka, Lubomír (advisor) ; Štěpánová, Irena (referee) ; Drápala, Daniel (referee)
Thesis "The České Středohoří Mountains - Cultural Landscape" deals with the territory of the České Středohoří Mountains' Protected Area as the landscape of settlements, namely settlements of rural character. Based on the field research, the basic characteristics of vernacular architecture in that territory are described and selected influences, that completed local villages' rural construction, are depicted. The thesis also provides evidence of regional interest in the national history and geography of the České Středohoří Mountains, especially in rural construction and urbanism. This interest in the national history and geography is discussed in the context of the development of Czech and German national emancipation. The entire work put emphasis on the period from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
